Ontario Hemp Alliance
In 1998 Health Canada passed regulations allowing for the commercial cultivation of hemp in Canada, for the first time in 60 years. In 1999 four Brant County and Six Nations farmers grew hemp crops.
2400 hectacres were grown across Canada. Half of which was grown in Ontario. Southwestern Ontario has ideal growing conditions for this crop and the only two existing hemp fiber processing plants in Canada. It is said that there are over 10,000 uses for hemp fiber, seed and oils. Hemp has many environmental benefits it is an alternative to wood and fossil fuels, requires no herbicides or pesticides to grow and its deep root system prevents erosion, removes toxins and aerates the soil.
Our organization is engaged in a special project funded by Human Resources Development Canada to develop an Ontario Hemp Alliance Ontario Hemp Alliance that will identify and report on the marketable product opportunities for a vertically integrated hemp industry locally and globally.
